A REFLECTION... Building for “the next generation” in Mackay

Fergus Builders (or “Fergus”) was created way back in 1983 by Jann & the late Garry Fergus. It was birthed from a passion to help develop a stronger & more prosperous Mackay. Their first office was part of an industrial shed that also doubled as their family home for a number of years.

But from those humble beginnings, Garry & Jann remained determined to create the successful business that “Fergus” is today.

Jann has stayed on after Garry’s passing in June 2006 as Managing Director “because we have over 50 families to that rely on Fergus, & I won’t let them down.”

“From day one, Garry & I always wanted to employ young people so they could grow their careers & their future here in Mackay. We would take young lads on, & help them make better decisions in life along the way.

So we started & have remained true to good old family values.” Jann continued, “by providing consistent, good value, high quality building services to our clients- & by continuing to invest in our team of Mackay’s youth,” she explains. “And so, by working hard, we have grown the team at Fergus into one of the builders of choice in the Mackay region,”

“We now have seven apprentices in our team & continue to engage around twenty local contractors & various suppliers, therefore giving back to the industry & to the Mackay region.”

“The floods in 2008 were a great example. We re-scheduled as many of our jobs as we could, so that we could help as many families in Mackay as possible. At the end of the day, supporting the people of Mackay is more important than anything else.”

“We do put our hearts into the work we do & we work hard at maintaining a high quality of workmanship. We love to delight our clients with our finished product, whether it be a home or a commercial building; & take great pride in being the best we can be for our clients.”

“Since Garry has passed away, we have remained focused on our core building skills, we have kept our loyal employees & contractors too, as we have continued to grow. One area we have expanded is our internal design team. We now design & construct in all three markets.” She proudly states, “We have architects, engineers, surveyors, private certifiers & our own project management services, all ready to help our clients.”

“I have no doubt that we have the best ‘design & construct’ building team available in Mackay Region for the Homes, Commercial & Industrial Building market places. But don’t listen to me; Fergus has just won three 2008 Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards to prove it!” Jann was proudly referring to Fergus’s awards for Best Education Facilities up to $3M; Best Commercial Buildings (Office accom) $3M to $12M; & Best Health Facilities up to $3M.

“We refuse to use the “r” word. Sure the market is challenging now, but we have a talented team & are committed to them, as well as our clients.” She stares at the awards on the wall, & an infectious smile breaks out. “We are focused on being the best in the industry & that has to be good for our team & Mackay’s next generation.”
